:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janalyn -- A great new historical cozy mystery! : For the longest time I have loved the Gail Meath’s book’sAnd although all of her books have varying subject matter and genres, I was still surprised to see this one about a PI. Of course, when I started reading it I could certainly tell it was one of her books and although not big on cozy mysteries. I am certainly big on this authors books. When Jack’s diamond and his lovable dog face start investigating the death of a playwright, who is murder was called natural causes. Jack’s is in for the case of his life. Laura Greystone although a singer on Broadway is frustrated when she is dragged into the case but her attraction for Jack’s and lovable Ace Will melt her frustrations. With a strong and beautiful female character and a dashing intelligent handsome male character is a recipe for all of Gail meath’s books, but her clever plots are the seasoning that makes each book unique. I absolutely love her books and cannot get enough of them. I do hope Jack’s diamond becomes a serious and I can read more about Ace. I highly recommend this book and if you love cozy historical mysteries as this one is set in the 1920s, you will definitely love this book. I received this book from Books sirens, but I am leaving this review totally voluntarily. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Melanie S. -- History, mystery and romance : Gail Meath writes a very absorbing mystery. Songbird happens in Roaring 20's NYC - specifically the Broadway theater district. A series of murders, a wealthy mom's boy suspect, and Laura, a newly discovered chorus girl/rising star who receives the gift of gardenia after each murder. The role of detective, Jax Diamond, is filled by a man devoted to duty and the truth, except or his bizarre and pain-filled past. He and Laura meet, and the romance begins. Laura is no dumb hick, and quickly makes herself essential to solving the case, while Jax dares to relive and reveal some his inner secrets as his love for her grows. The requisite disastrous turn of events, the nail-biting tension of imminent death, the last desperate effort to save the victim, and the light-bulb moment when niggling incidents, seemingly unrelated characters, and long-hidden secrets merge into a clear picture of guilt and innocence are all handled quite adroitly. The characters, major and minor, are refreshingly realistic and believable. The absence of melodrama lets the story tell itself through Laura and Jax's eyes - and a darned good yarn it is, too. I stayed up lat to finish it; it is THAT good. And thus ends my voluntary ARC review. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from RT -- Great Mystery and Entertaining Era : There are many things I enjoyed about this book. The story opens with quite an interest grabber. I love music and it has played a major role in my life. As such, I was thoroughly entertained by the characters and the descriptions of the musical world setting for the book. I especially like that Jax, a main character, was a musician (besides being a private detective) and the he used music (and his dog) to help cope with the harshness of his upbringing and to bring calm to his current life. In addition, I could not help but think of my parents who grew up in the 20's. My mother grew up in Miami Beach, Florida, and she would often tell of her jobs (one was rinsing out bathing suits for the rich) and of the stars and starlets of her youth, e.g., Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, Greta Garbo, and Clark Gable. There are some tense scenes in the book, and I would find myself reading faster and faster due to the tension! Interesting era and time in history. I enjoyed the chapter titles and the clue(s) they provided. This book is a what I would call a cozy mystery with a storyline written in a very interesting era. As I was reading it, it felt as though I was being drawn into the New York of Damon Runyon mixed with a Raymond Chandler novel. This is the era of musical theater and Broadway. Sam Sanders is writing a musical for 23 year old Laura Graystone. Sam writes in small apartment and always takes his dinner in a lunch pail. PI Jax Diamond goes into the apartment when Sam does not come out. The death begins a can’t put down book. I really enjoyed how the story developed and the characters expanded. I always wanted to read just one more page/chapter. As the clues were given, I would change my mind about who the killer was. I liked the ending and can’t wait to read book 2. Love the story and especially the main characters and they will be back as this is the first of a serie. This is a must read.
